“Runaway” Garbage Truck Falls Over Wall, Totals BMW X5 and Audi Q3

Of all the things you could expect to land on your front lawn, the least you’d imagine seeing would be a garbage truck. Especially if, in landing, it would smash 2 of your most expensive cars.

CCTV footage from an incident that happened in Saint Heliers, Auckland, in April this year, has been made public and is making the rounds online. It shows a “runaway” garbage truck falling off a wall and landing on top of 2 European luxury cars, as the NZ Herald puts it.

According to the owner, who chose to remain anonymous, in landing in his courtyard, the truck totaled a BMW X5 and an Audi Q3. However, he’s not the kind to worry about money: he’s just happy that no one was out of the house at the time, or they could have been killed.

“I got a phone call from my daughter who surprisingly said there was a rubbish truck in our front garden,” the owner tells the publication. “Two cars were crushed, one was a BMW X5 and the other was an Audi Q3, and it resulted in them both being written off. There was also damage to a stone wall and to a gate and fence. Fortunately there were three cars in the driveway and it missed one of them.”

At the same time, the owner praised everyone for how they handled the incident. Insurers, police, the Waste Management company, and even the driver of the truck were very helpful, doing their best to solve the incident.

Waste Management has concluded its investigation into the case, but the police and Serious Crash Unit investigations are still underway, the report notes.

As for how the accident came to happen in the first place, it was a matter of bad luck: the driver stepped out of the truck and it simply sped down the road.

“Fundamentally the brakes failed on the truck, only 30m up the road, and the truck came down across our driveway and landed off the wall you can see,” the owner of the totaled cars says. “The driver was outside the truck at the time which was lucky for him and no one was in our driveway which was very fortunate too.”

He can say that again.
