This isn`t the first time we’ve reported the possibility of Alfa Romeo making their D-Segment car, possibly called the Giulia, rear-wheel driven. However, if the information we previously quoted came from Italy, this time it comes courtesy of Automobile magazine, a US publication.
This time, the information actually comes from the top, from the Fiat group CEO, Sergio Marchionne, who recently spoke about Alfa Romeo and their future plans for the brand. Apparently, the new generation of Alfas will be tailored for both American and European buyers, and the brand will be positioned and priced as being premium. They will have front-, rear- and all-wheel drive models in their lineup.

Regarding the rear-wheel drive sedan, Marchionne has assured everybody that it will be ‘brilliant’. He hopes it will finally be revealed in 2014, not 2015. The car may very well share its platform with an all-new mid-sized SRT coupe, which could bear the ‘Barracuda’ name tag. The Fiat boss also said that front-wheel drive would only be used on the brand’s smaller offerings, which is excellent news, for lovers of great-handling cars.

We are still waiting on official confirmation regarding the rear-wheel drive nature of the upcoming Giulia, as the story has been dragging on for a while now, without any real and official information to back up the rumors. Check out this editorial for a more in-depth view of the whole Alfa RWD story, and their possible 5-Series rival.
