BMW officials are known for speaking in riddles at auto events or during interviews and it was more than once that journalists actually believed them and published all sorts of crazy stories. The latest comes from UK-based publication Auto Express that had a small sit down with Carsten Pries, the Head of Product Development for M cars.
According to them, the new M2 will make its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January simply because the 2 Series Coupe was introduced at the same venue this year. That would fit the 1 year traditional gap BMW leaves between regular and M models, they claim, and therefore this guess is just as good as any. Only if it were true...
Don’t get us wrong, we’re just as excited as you are to see the new car but, at best, the Detroit Auto Show will bring out the Concept that previews the production car.
It’s true that, from what Carsten Pries said (they even got his name wrong) it would appear this way: “ [there] tends to be a year delay between the base model and the M car”. However, don’t get your hopes up.
Exceptions from the rule have been seen before, the latest being the M3 for example, that was launched long after the 1 year anniversary of the F30 3 Series. The same could be said about the upcoming X5 M with which BMW sure seems to be taking its time, despite the fact that the F15 has been around for quite some time now. Furthermore, the X6 M will be launched at the same time even though the standard F16 X6 was unveiled just a few months ago.
Last but not least, we know for a fact that the production of the M2 will start in November 2015 thanks to our reliable source inside Munich so don’t get your hopes up. As we said, the 374 HP beast will, at best, be shown in concept guise at Detroit. Keep your fingers crossed!
