Rumors About a BMW X4 M Performance Model Return, Are Plainly Stupid

The latest rumor coming in from the UK press is simply put, stupid. The guys from Autocar claim that they have an ‘insider’ at BMW’s headquarters that told them, the rumored BMW X4 M40i model will become a reality next year.
So far so good, you might say, what’s the big idea in calling them stupid? Well, a little research wouldn’t have hurt, as the author claims that the new car will be using the S55 engine without knowing (or bothering to inform himself) a thing about it in the first place.

According to him, the 3-liter biturbo inline 6-cylinder mill “was first developed for the 1-series M Coupe and is also earmarked for the upcoming BMW M2, is rumoured to have a revised induction system to achieve an output around 350bhp.” That is as stupid as it sounds.

First of all, the 1M Coupe used a revised version of the N54 engine to begin with. Even though it was also a biturbo inline 6-cylinder 3-liter unit, it was a completely different plant compared to the S55.

Then again, the M2 will be using a revised version of the N55 engine but it will not be the S55 that is currently being used on the M3 and M4 models. Instead, the smaller M2 will be using the N55B30T0 plant which will have around 370 HP at its disposal. Yes, it won’t have a proper M-developed engine just like its predecessor.

That being said, it’s extremely hard to believe a word from the Autocar report since its author seems to be so far off in his presumptions. He is right in some aspects though: the M40i will come out with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine and it will be shared with the M2. However, it has nothing to do with the S55 plant or the original 1M Coupe.

That being said, we can tell you that the real M40i model is scheduled to enter production this December and the future X3 model (G01) will have a full M version which will, indeed, use the S55 mill of the M3 and M4.
