For a while now, Ford has been striving to link some of its products to the world of combat aviation. Over the past few years, 11 one-of-a-kind vehicles inspired by aircraft of a long-gone era have been made and sold for charity. And now comes no. 12.
Called Roush Ford Mustang GT Old Crow, this new supercar is meant to honor a specific World War II P-51 Mustang airplane and its pilot, Air Force Col. Bud Anderson. The duo made quite an impression above the world’s battlefields during the war, flying for a total of 116 combat missions, including on D-Day, without being hit a single time.
The Mustang GT shown on Tuesday (July 16) by Ford is a tribute to both man and machine. There are references to the P-51 Anderson nicknamed Old Crow all over the place – on the paint that replicates the colors of the plane, on the hood where Old Crow is written, on the decklid panel that boasts the Eighth Air Force emblem badge, and on the grille where the P-51 Mustang badge has been fitted.
Even the interior has been designed to match, featuring military-themed green leather and canvas, red shifter nob and door handles, and the word P-51 written on the passenger-side dashboard.
But the car is more than a visual makeover of a conventional Mustang GT. It has been tuned out of its senses to provide immense power and handling.
Under the hood lies the usual 5.0-liter V8 engine, enhanced with a Roush Performance supercharger that gives it 710 horsepower and 610 lb.-ft. of torque. Performance figures were not announced, but it’s likely they’re impressive as well.
To handle the extra power, some more modifications had to be made. The car is equipped with special front and rear spoilers, heat extractors on the hood and exhaust tips that replicate the exhaust of the airplane.
To top it all off, the Mustang GT Old Crow wears 20-inch lightweight Roush wheels wrapped in 275/35R Continental ExtremeContact sport tires.
There will be only one of these ever made, and as all others that came before, it will be sold during the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on July 25.
