Rossi Expects Tough Season in 2009

Although he won his first race in 2009, at Jerez – in a quite convincing manner, we might add – reigning world champion Valentino Rossi reckoned it will be very tough to defend his title in 2009. As compared to last year, all bike manufacturers in the MotoGP have improved consistently, leading to 3 different winners in the first 3 races.

Rossi is, so far, the only rider in the MotoGP roster to have scored a podium at his every race this season, as he is 11 points ahead of nearest rival Casey Stoner in the overall classification. He insisted he needs to keep his good pace for as long as possible, as it's more important going for the championship rather than going for race wins.

In three races we have had three different leaders in the championship: Casey, Jorge and me. So we need to stay concentrated at the maximum and make no mistakes. We have to try to win when it's possible and try to arrive on the podium anyway when we have problems. I have already 65 points. I'm in front of Casey, who I think is the most difficult rival. But also Pedrosa and Lorenzo are not far away either,” said Rossi after his Spanish triumph.

The next challenge for the Italian and his Yamaha is the French Grand Prix, two weekends from now, where the Japanese manufacturer managed to score an impressive 1-2 last season. While admitting the Le Mans circuit falls under the “must-win” category this year, Rossi expects a good pace from his bike in France.

“I think it will be very tough to the end. Le Mans is very different to Jerez, but I have good memories because in all history Yamaha has been very fast at Le Mans. Last year I was very fast,” added the Italian rider.
