Rosberg Will Not Accept No 2 Role with Mercedes

Nico Rosberg insisted that he will not play second fiddle to Michael Schumacher, in case the 40-year old German will indeed sign a contract with Mercedes GP. The former 7-time world champion of Formula One is linked with a 3.5M euro one-year deal with Mercedes' F1 team, and Rosberg admitted that this would be a great news for both his team and the world of F1.

However, when asked how he feels about becoming No 2 within the Mercedes team, the 24-year-old German made it very clear that, as much as he respects Schumacher, he won't stop chasing for race wins and possible championship titles with Ross Brawn's team.

Me a number two? No. But I respect Schumi a lot. At Mercedes there is not hierarchy. It has always been known that the two drivers are equal,” said Rosberg according to the Bild newpaper, trusting that the company's racing strategy in the past will allow him to race for himself in 2010.

Sure, if at the end of the year there is the possibility for only one driver to fight seriously for the title, the team concentrates on that driver. But until then the Mercedes philosophy is 'We have two number ones',” added the German driver.

According to recent reports, Michael Schumacher will apparently test drive a 2007-spec Brawn GP car prior to his signing a one-year deal with Mercedes. Although the location of that test is yet to be disclosed, it is believed it will happen within the next few days. Both Italian and German media suggested that Schu's signature is imminent, especially since Ferrari's Luca di Montezemolo admitted this week that the German is not legally bound to Ferrari for the 2010 season.

According to the Italian official, Schumacher is “only a friend” and doesn't hold any official position within the Ferrari organization. For the time being, he's a consultant for the company's sports car division.
