Rosberg Says He's Just as Fast as Schumacher

Although returnee Michael Schumacher has almost constantly outpaced Nico Rosberg in testing during the month of February, the son of 1982 F1 champion Keke Rosberg insisted that he doesn't see himself trailing the 7-time world champion just yet.

Having scored only a couple of podiums in his 4-year stint with Williams F1, Rosberg insisted that it's “hard to say” who is the quickest driver in the Mercedes GP lineup after the winter tests, especially since the lap times scored by each happened in different days and, therefore, different weather conditions.

We were seldom on the same track on the same day. I think Michael respects me a bit more after these tests, which is important to me. Above all, I wanted to show the team that the car runs equally well when I am at the wheel,” said Rosberg, according to Germany's Bild newspaper.

No matter how things went down during testing, one promise that Rosberg made prior to the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix was that he'll finally become a race winner in 2010, while also fighting side by side with his much more successful teammate for a better position in the standings.

I will definitely be on a par with him (Schumacher) and win races this year. To do that I have to beat him now and then. But Michael is the best racing driver of all time, and certainly not without justification. (...) The tests have shown that there are at least four strong teams that are very close together. And one of these eight drivers must be at best eighth,” added the German driver.

The 2010 Formula One season gets under way next weekend, between March 12 thru 14, on the Sakhir International Circuit in Bahrain.
