A motorcycle cop lost his life last night in Romania's capital Bucharest after he fell into a large hole dug in one of the city's main boulevards. According to the first news reports, the motorcycle cop was part of an official escort and was rushing ahead of the convoy to fluidize traffic when the unfortunate event occurred.
The hole, reported to be several meters deep was reportedly dug by a local construction company whose name was not disclosed. Images from the site show the hole surrounded by several barricades made from metal bars.

However, TV news footage doesn't appear to show any of the yellow blinking lights used during low light and poor visibility conditions. This may lead the investigators to concluding that the road section where the holes were located was not properly signaled as required by the law.

The cop, 28, had been serving as a motorcycle officer for eight years until his unfortunate crash. The first response units hurried to the crash site and found the rider in cardio-respiratory arrest. He was rushed to the University Hospital in Bucharest but there was nothing the doctors could do for him. He succumbed to the extensive injuries sustained in the fall.

His helmet was also reportedly found at the edge of the pothole, with signs of severe damage. An investigation was initiated, aiming at establishing the exact conditions of the accident. Information on the speed of the bike, accident dynamics, technical condition of the motorcycle, and more data from the eye witnesses is expected to shed some light on this disturbing accident.
