Better late than never is the catch phrase that best describes Romania's decision to finally offer subsidies to people who want to but eco cars.
The country's government has voted on a new piece of legislation which will give an "Ecoticket" to buyers of electric vehicles. The ticket is worth RON12,000, which is equivalent to €2750 at the current exchange rate.
Compared to what countries like Norway, that might not seem like much, but at least it's a step in the right direction. Even with the the government grant, EVs will not be cheap to buy.
The Ampera starts at about €47,500 in Romania. Both the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe are still pending launch.
EV sale in Europe are off to a relatively slow start, as numbers are still in the tens of thousands. Romania also has a distinct lack of EV infrastructure which might deter buyers.
The "Ecoticket" law will come into effect as of March 15th, 2013.
