Rolls-Royce Pokes the Bentley Bentayga, Says It'll Soon Be "Number Two"

While we all know a Rolls-Royce SUV-thing is in the making, we're yet to get any clear hint on how the car will look like or any other relevant information for that matter.

During the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, Bentley launched what they dubbed as the "first ultra-luxury SUV" in the form of the Bentayga. People were impressed with what they saw, so the whole 2016 production of the super-posh off-roader is already sold out. And we now know one of the lucky owners (the first, actually) will be Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Rolls-Royce is probably biting its nails at this time, but a company with such credentials can't show such rude behavior. Instead, they chose to make a stand by verbally announcing their presence.

Talking to an Auto Express representative, Rolls-Royce's boss Torsten Muller Otvos very unmysteriously said "Bentley SUV is clearly the number two." Not from where we're standing, mister Torsten Muller Otvos. Or, at least, you might have chosen the wrong tense for the verb.

On the other hand, he did spill a few beans on his company's future model, more or less confirming it will be called "Cullinan" after the world's largest diamond.

Other stuff we know about the Rolls-Royce SUV is that it won't be exactly an SUV in the strictest sense of the word, but a luxury car with off-road abilities. It won't be developed on any of the existing BMW platforms, using a new aluminum spaceframe designed specifically for it.

All this high-level trash talk isn't even very well founded, as the two cars will have a significant price gap between them when the Rolls will finally roll-out (probably around 2018). With options such as the Breitling watch costing $200,000, though, the Bentley might make the Rolls play catch-up in terms of money too.
