Rolls-Royce Motors Sues Rapper for Using the Company’s Name

There’s no problem with aspiring young singers spitting gangster rhymes while sitting on the hood of a Wraith. Heck, even the idea that the pride of British luxury auto industry has now become a rapper’s ride is not a problem. But there are limits and using the company’s name to sell you LPs sure is one of them.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. is suing Georgia rapper Royce Rizzy, formerly known as Rolls Royce Rizzy, for trademark infringement in New Jersey federal court. According to the complaint filed Wednesday and quoted by Law360, Robert D. Davis, on his real name, performs under the stage name Royce Rizzy while selling T-shirts and hats sporting the Rolls-Royce badge. This, obviously, comes as a violation of federal and state trademark laws.

It would seem the luxury car maker has sent multiple cease and desist letters but nothing changed. At the other end, Rizzy claims he dropped the “Rolls” from his stage name at least a year and a half ago and he’s no longer selling the shirts. He’s only wearing them, which shouldn't be a legal problem.

It’s not quite clear what’s the next step in this little disagreement, but one thing is sure if you want to look gangster and pretend you actually make rap music, maybe you should at least rent a Rolls-Royce car instead of putting the brand’s mark on you sweaters.

Oh, and if you seriously believe wearing a Rolls-Royce T-shirt has anything to do with driving the actual car, then you’re definitely wrong.
