Rolls-Royce Flies Black Badge Models To Japan For Tokyo Photoshoot

Tokyo might not be the perfect place to drive a Rolls-Royce around, but don’t forget the capital of Japan also happens to be one of the biggest financial centers in the world. Given these circumstances, don’t be surprised to find a Phantom flanked by countless kei cars at the traffic lights.

Rolls-Royce has flown three models to the most populous metropolitan area in the world, the Black Badge editions of the Ghost sedan, Wraith coupe, and Dawn convertible. As the title suggests, these cars are the focal points of the “Black Badge: Tokyo After Hours” photo project.

Japanese photographer Yoshifumi Ogawa is one of the three men in charge of the cameras, capturing the cars in spectacular locations such as the bustling poshness of Ginza and on the eye-popping Rainbow Bridge that connects Shibaura Pier with Odaiba. Mark Riccioni and Darren Chan are the other two, choosing to explore the beauty of the cars in places such as Akihabara, Tokyo Bay, Shinjuku, and the Daikoku Futo man-made island near Yokohama.

“Just as Black Badge aesthetics are at home in the city of Tokyo, these amazing Rolls-Royces have very much struck a chord with our Japanese clients,” said Paul Harris, regional director of Rolls-Royce in the Asia Pacific. “Over 40% of Ghost, Wraith and Dawn models we deliver in Japan are in the guise of their Black Badge alter egos.”

The images from Ogawa, Riccioni, and Chan will be exhibited at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Tokyo in Minato-ku from the 8th to 13th of July, accompanied by the exact same cars depicted in the pictures. All three share similar underpinnings with the previous generation of the BMW 7 Series, including the N74 twin-turbo V12 engine and 8HP automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen.

Rolls-Royce is currently testing the next generation of the Ghost, which will lose the BMW platform for a shortened Architecture of Luxury from the Phantom and Cullinan. The all-aluminum spaceframe is paired with an air suspension capable of offering a magic carpet ride quality.
