Rolls-Royce Chairman Confirms SUV Model Is in the Works via Open Letter

After teasing us and claiming that they will do things their own way, whenever they think the time is right, Rolls-Royce finally confirmed that they are working on an SUV model in a particular way. The BMW-owned company decided to confirm the rumors via an open-letter instead of the classic press release. Call it what you want, we’re all in for the details.

As expected, they were scarce, the bullet-point letter saying only that the new model they are working on will have an all-new aluminum architecture, a high body and will be able to cross any terrain. That sounds exciting already!

Of course, in this endeavor they have to be connected to the rest of the company’s trademarks and that includes both the exterior design and the luxury customers have come to expect from them. The new logo of the car will seemingly be ‘Effortless... Everywhere’. Nothing to object here.

Although we don’t know what name will be picked for the new model or what its specs will be, it’s safe to assume that the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus will have a strong rival in the shape of the new Rolls, no matter how hard the company tries to downplay their ability to rise to the highest heights in this niche.

That’s where BMW steps in. It’s hard to believe that the new Rolls will be using a proprietary design and completely new chassis. Most likely, the SUV (even though they don’t call it that) will be based on the upcoming X7 and will share its platform and underpinning with it.

In turn, the X7 will be using the G11 7 Series platform that we’ve already seen testing in the cold Scandinavian weather of Sweden in the shape of a mule. That means the new Rolls-Royce all-terrain automobile will actually be comprised of a hell of a lot of parts from a 7 Series.

It’s not necessary a bad thing. The current models all use 7 Series underpinnings but the truth of the matter is, they will have to work very hard to get the mixture of high ground clearance, Roll-Royce design and luxury just right to impress the super rich. If there’s a company that can do that, it’s the one with The Spirit of Ecstasy on the bonnet.
