BMW Motorrad may have unveiled two new retro-styled machines in the R nineT family this fall, but if you really want a neo-retro BMW bike, Roland Sands might be the answer. Its latest project totally transposed the new bike in 1936.
BMW Motorrad and Roland Sands Design (RSD) have a strong relationship, with the latter being the first to give the R nineT a touch at the moment of its launch. Not to mention the Concept 90, which, apparently, had a lot of influence on the new R nineT Racer model.

However, RSD is back with a new take on the roadster platform, this one taking the style way back in the 30s. You’re looking here at a modern interpretation of the classic BMW R5, and if you’re asking us, it’s just perfect.

The new project started by taking off almost all parts that make the new R nineT. Then RSD added some outsourced (busy these days apparently) new metal components like a redesigned rear subframe, new classic mudguards and even a new tank made to look almost exactly like the one on the R5 but with a see-through window to keep an eye on the fuel level.

Next came in a new seat that perfectly continued the smooth lines of the gas tank towards the rear of the bike, some custom engine covers, new intake and a performance two-in-one-in-two exhaust.

The front got a GP Suspension rebuilt fork with back powder-coated tubes along with diamond-like coating stanchions. The rear got the already business-standard Ohlins shock.

On a project like this, wheels are important too, so RSD came up with a custom spoke design. The 17-inch front rim got swapped for a 19-inch one. Both tires are wrapped in quality Dunlop rubber, with D208F up front and Q3 at the back.

We love it already, and we think this should be another model that BMW Motorrad should offer on the market.
