Robotic Nose Will Replace World Trade Center Trakr Hero Dog in The Future

Mexican postgraduate student of Technologico de Monterrey Bianca Lorena Villarreal has developed a device that allows multiple robotic platforms to follow the path on certain odors. Designed to sense human smell like blood or sweat, the technology could replace rescue dogs like famous Trakr, the German Shepherd that helped dig through some 30 feet of unstable debris at the World Trade Center site and locate the last survivor of the attack.

Called Olfactory System, this technology is based on artificial intelligence algorithms it can recognize odors and toxic gases or elements. “In rescue missions it might recognize blood, sweat or human urine,” the former student of Mexico-based Tec de Monterrey explained.

According to an official press release, in the first phase of development, the student wondered about how livign things carry out the process of odor recognition and then transferred that knowledge to the mathematical sciences, and thus translated it into algorithms.

The data collected by the device is sent by radio to a computer, where it is analyzed in real time to know the origin and direction of the aroma, using programmed algorithms. After she designed the system, the young researcher implemented this olfactory system to a robotic platform funded by CONACYT, to achieve its deployment to hypothetical emergency zones.

Bianca Villarreal is developing algorithms that allow the discrimination of odor, to give the robot some artificial intelligence that contributes to decision making processes. For developing the “electronic nose,” she was recognized as one of the most innovative young Mexicans in the Mexican edition of MIT Technology Review, by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Several dog breeds around the globe are known to be extremely smart and capable of rescuing human lives with they’re extreme olfactive sense. Trakr is arguably one of the most prestigious rescue dogs. Together with police officer James Symington, Trakr helped dig through some 30 feet of unstable debris at the World Trade Center “ground zero” site and locate the last human survivor of the attack. According to God Guide, the dog’s bravery was so celebrated that he is going to be cloned for use in other police rescue forces.

Well, now this technology hit the market, we might just avoid cloning hero dogs and still save lives. Yuhuu!
