According to Italian news agencies, the Polish driver suffered an accident earlier today during the opening stage of the Rally Ronde di Andora. Shortly after the paramedics have reached the scene of the crash, the Renault F1 driver was taken by helicopter to the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much information for the time being on the type of accident Kubica has suffered, or the injuries he sustained after the crash. So far, official confirmation of his crash is still to be made, but local media reports reveal that his co-driver in the Italian event Jakub Gerber was not hurt. Also, team sources have revealed to Autosport that Kubica remained conscious throughout the medical checks.
Today’s event in Italy was supposed to be Kubica’s first rallying running at the wheel of a Super 2000 car. The Pole has contested in a bunch of rallies before, courtesy of his good relationship with French manufacturer Renault, all of his outings being done “for fun.”
As soon as we have any additional information on Kubica’s medical condition, we’ll keep you in touch. We sure hope the Lotus Renault driver will be able to make a quick recovery from the accident, otherwise his testing schedule in F1 this off-season will have a lot to suffer.
The upcoming F1 group test is scheduled for as early as next week, at Jerez, between February 10-13.
