“I think it's fantastic, this is one thing that I think touring cars have been missing a little bit. It's pretty much Superpole because we only get one shot on the tires at 90 per cent of the circuits we go to,” said Huff.
“That's one area I've worked really hard on for the past 12 months and it was one of the key factors in my good season. I'm very excited about it. It will make it a bit more entertaining and lively for the fans, and more exciting for the championship because it throws something else into the mix,” added the British driver.
Huff has ended his 2008 FIA WTCC campaign in 3rd place, his highest ranking in the series since his involvement with GM's Chevrolet. He is to retain his seat with the team for 2009.
FIA has announced that the qualifying format for the 2009 series will undergo some reshaping, based on the F1 series. Therefore, the 30-minute qualifying session will be split in two parts – a 20-minute Q1 and a 10-minute Q2 – with only the best 10 drivers advancing from Q1 to Q2. The first 5 rows of the starting grid are to be set after the Q2 times, while the positions from 11 onwards will be set based on the Q1 times.
The format is to remain unchanged for the second race on Sunday, as the Top 8 on the grid will consist of the reversed Top 8 positions in Race 1. Positions from 9 onwards will be based on the qualifying session on Saturday.
