Everybody who's into cars knows that roadsters or convertibles aren't as competent as coupes, especially now that crash tests are being taken so seriously. But that doesn't mean they have to be slow, especially when you're talking about all-time greats like the McLaren 570S, Audi R8, BMW i8, and Mercedes-AMG GT C.
Carwow may have been running out of drag races to do, and this is definitely not going to be as popular as last week's monster SUV showdown. However, battles between roadster supercars or sports cars are pretty rare, so we are going to enjoy this one to the fullest.
It's not clear what the percent for this drag race is, other than all four cars being very expensive and quite new. The newest on the lot is the BMW i8 Spyder, which was launched only a few months ago and has the most lack-luster powertrain. All the others have many cylinders and big power numbers, but the i8 convertible soldiers on with a 1.5-liter turbo 3-cylinder which even when helped by its electric brother can only deliver 374 horsepower. Sure, it's got AWD, but is that enough to compensate for 1,595 kg?
So what about the big guns? Well, Mat is once again behind the wheel of a top contender, after his victory in the Tesla. This time, he's calling on 570 horsepower from a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, which can only belong to the McLaren 570S.
Yianni, who was drag racing in his Lamborghinis, is predictably behind the wheel of an Audi R8, which he likes the look of. Meanwhile, rapper Professor Green is at the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG GT C, which sits above the S and delivers 558 HP from its familiar 4-liter.
Mat decided to make Yianni angry once again by proposing that the race start with each roadster putting its roof down first, before setting off. The Mercedes-AMG is way faster at this, which the Audi lowers its top the slowest.
After that, the four supercars/sports cars do a real drag race, and even though the Audi launches way faster, the McLaren does... McLaren things and wins from behind.
