Road Raging Florida Driver Run Over by His Own Truck

On their own, road rage and impaired driving are deadly enough, but combine the two and you have a potential powder keg for tragedy. Fortunately, the tragedy for one Florida man was self-inflicted when he allegedly suffered a severe case of road rage while driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the Gainesville Sun, 48-year-old Joseph Carl had rear-ended a woman who was stopped at a traffic light in Gainesville, FL on Tuesday evening. Now it isn’t clear if his road rage precipitated the accident, but the report says that Carl got out of his truck and began pounding on the woman’s car and yelling at her.

As you could expect the woman wasn’t about to hang out with an angry drunk guy who just slammed into her car, so she drove away from the accident, which is when the man came to the painful realization that he had forgot to put his truck in Park before getting out. Still in gear, the man’s Dodge Ram began to drive toward him, and eventually over him.

When the police arrived, the report says that Carl “was stumbling and had a strong odor of alcohol” and there were open and empty cans of Miller High Life discovered in the truck’s cab. Although he refused to blow into the Breathalyzer, he didn’t perform a field sobriety test, which he failed.

The news report says that Carl told police he does not drink and drive, but when they asked him about the beer cans he said he was drinking while driving home.

At the hospital, where he was taken to receive treatment for a broken foot and hand he suffered while being run over by his own truck, it was later found that he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 – nearly three times the legal limit in Florida. Needles to say, Carl was eventually arrested for DUI and DUI with property damage.
