Road Racing Costs Man His Ferrari Scuderia

A driver from North Vancouver had his 2008 Ferrari Scuderia confiscated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The man was racing the car up Mount Seymour in September, clocking up to 200 km/h (124 mph).

The Ferrari special, which is worth $235,000 (EUR175,000), has been sold already at a local dealership, according to the provincial government. The other car involved in the race, a 2008 BMW M6, will be auctioned on the province’s B.C. Auction website. The Italian supercar is the most expensive impounded by the province since British Columbia’s civil forfeiture legislation was introduced in 2006.

Fifty percent of the money raised from selling the car have gone to a relative of the driver, who is listed as the owner of the vehicle (he must be very happy right now). The reckless driver got 30 percent, while the government took the remaining 20 percent. From the BMW, auction British Columbian authorities will take 70 percent of the proceeds.

The Ferrari driver was clocked doing 200 km/h (124 mph) in a 60 km/h (37 mph) zone. What’s worse is that a policeman says the racers narrowly missed a mother walking her two children.

“Our laws now work to take vehicles away from reckless drivers before they hurt someone because they are demonstrating no regard for the safety of themselves or others on our roads,” according to solicitor general Rich Coleman in a statement.

The drivers also got a 15-day driving ban. We think that British Columbia is a bad place to be racing a car. In case you were wondering, the Italian thoroughbred does 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 198 miles per hour (319 km/h).
