For most people with the faintest interest in the automotive industry, the word Rivian means little today. As a carmaker, Rivian exists only because of the development centers it opened here and there and the manufacturing plant it purchased in Normal, Illinois. A company that currently has no car on the road.
But it looks that’s about to change, as on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Auto Show Rivian is bringing into public view not one, but two of its electric cars: the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV. And from LA, the cars will head to the American market sometime next year.
Electric cars, including pickups and SUVs, we’ve seen before, but we must say not many of them match the strikingly beautiful design of the Rivian machines and the incredible performances advertised by their maker.
At the heart of the two cars will sit three types of battery packs, with capacity ranging from 105 kWh to 180 kWh. That translate into ranges that can be as high as over 400 miles (643 km), a figure at the top of the chart for today’s available electric cars.
Power for the wheels is provided by a quad-motor system, meaning an electric motor fitted onto each of the wheels. A single motor on the top of the range version develops a little under 200 horsepower, which means a total of over 750 hp.
The cars are not shown at the Los Angeles Auto show per se, but at "events surrounding it." Even so, they are real, and plans for their production are already in place.
Rivian will charge $61,500 after Federal Tax credit for the R1T pickup and $65,000 after Federal Tax credit for the R1S SUV. Reservations are already being accepted for a refundable deposit of $1,000.
In the document attached below, you’ll find all the details on both the seven-seat SUV and the five-seat pickup truck of the future.
