Rinspeed is using an eye-catching solution to address the limited range issue of electric vehicle, with the Swiss company introducing the Dock+Go mobility concept as an answer to this.
Based on a smart fortwo, this comes in the form of an add-on trailer that is directly attached to the car and comes with rotating wheels. It holds an energy pack with a combustion engine/range extender, thus being able to substantially increase driving range.
Rinspeed goes even further, telling us that the design of the “backpack on wheels” can be tailor made in order to be able to cater for each application’s needs: for example, a storage compartment can be integrated in the structure.
The concept, which is described as the first “Vario-Hybrid” will make its debut at next year’s Geneva Auto Show. We like the idea of being able to choose between boosting your range if you want to, or leaving the add-on at home if you don’t need it.
