Rimac and Monster Tajima Built a 1,475 HP Electric Brute For Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak is one of the most unusual forms of motorsport a petrolhead can wish for, but the high levels of entertainment combine with an equal amount of danger and adrenaline. However, everybody wants to conquer the mountain; Rimac and Monster Tajima included.

In 2013, Sebastian Loeb demolished the Pikes Peak record as he ran the famous mountain in an 8:13.878, taking one minute and 33 seconds off 2012's record. But we all know what happens when a new record is set, no matter the competition, right? Yes, others will want to break that and will do their utmost to succeed.

Just ask Rimac and Monster Tajima about it, as Croatian carmaker Rimac Automobili's expertise and Mr. Tajima’s decades-long experience in racing will make a duet that will hopefully make a splash at this year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race scheduled on June 28.

Also, they have a car for the job, namely the Tajima Rimac E-Runner Concept_One. The monster-racer is propelled by four independent electric motors, granting the car a total power of over 1,1 MW (1,475 HP).

Another intriguing detail about the car lies in the fact that there are no gearboxes or differentials on it. How is that possible, you might ask? Well, here's the magic, explained.

The power from the four motors is sent to each wheel by 'an innovative drive chain system' specially developed for this particular project. It also saves space and weight according to Rimac, so here's how they detail the solution:

"The Rimac AWTV (All Wheel Torque Vectoring system) controls the torque of each motor 100 times a second. The system can vary the torque on each wheel depending on the steering angle, speed, longitudinal and lateral forces, yaw rates and number of other variables."

Oh, and they also measured 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 2,2 seconds, while 200 km/h (125 mph) comes in 5,4 seconds from a standstill. Enough said.
