As well as getting the chance to play with endless supercars around the world, being a Top Gear presenter has proven to be quite lucrative for Richard Hammond. As a result, buying some extreme examples of performance cars is affordable for him.
As a “country boy”, as he describes himself, Hammond has a passion for Land Rovers, but he also loves old Porsches. In an effort to buy something that stands out in a crowd and offers a bit more exclusivity, he has also acquired a Morgan Aeromax. Just 100 have ever been built, and only half a dozen of these were in right-hand drive with a manual gearbox. Hammond has one of these six models.
But now, it appears that he has grown bored with it, as he is selling it through Mole Valley at about £100,000. If he gets the money, which he probably will, Richard will have enjoyed a couple of years of almost depreciation-free motoring from the Morgan.
The Morgan Aeromax is a coupe variation of the Aero 8. Production was limited to 100 cars, each costing from £110,000. Famous customers include Richard Hammond, Rowan Atkinson and Paul O'Grady.
The Aero 8 is powered by a BMW V8 engine, which puts out 367 hp (274 kW) at 6100 rpm giving it a top speed of over 170 mph (270 km/h). The supercar is hand-built in a style similar to that of the 1930s luxury cars. Some have even compared it to the Batmobile in the recent Batman films.
