Rhys Millen to Chase His Father on Pikes Peak

On June 26, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will mark a historic moment in its history: one of its legendary figures, Rod Millen, will be making what he hopes to be an exciting comeback, entering the race for the illusive 10 minutes mark alongside, and against his own son, current Pikes Peak trademark figure, Rhys.

The 60-year-old racer will drive a Hyundai Genesis Coupe developed by Rhys Millen Racing, eleven years after his last appearance on the course, competing against his son, who will be driving a Hyundai-powered RMR PM580 purpose-built tube-framed race car.

For the Millen family, this year's climb means the chance to enter the history books, provided both managed to set world records in their respective classes. And this is where the real competition between the tow lies.

“The possibility of world records in two unique classes makes my father and I really excited about the team’s prospects for this year,” said Rhys.

Facing fierce competition this year, the two Millens will rely heavily on the Hyundai Lambda V6 engines fitted on both cars. Several enhancements brought to the RMR make Rhys confident enough that this year the Pike would be a breeze.

“Breaking into the 9’s has been a dream of mine for the last 10 years,” added Rhys.  “With the precise technical adjustments we made to the PM580 this year, coupled with the increase in tarmac near the course summit, the prospect of another world record is better than ever. We plan on being the fastest car up the hill and getting the world record back in the family name, the Millen name.”
