Just over a week after announcing the purchase more Rheinmetall ground robots, the British Army is ready to receive its next-generation of Boxer armored fighting vehicles.
Boxer vehicles are highly mobile fighting machines that feature a modular design. This specific design allows for a wide range of configurations to meet different operational requirements. Depending on the mission, the modules can be rapidly exchanged. These vehicles have been in service since 2011, and numerous European countries' military services already use them.
The UK Ministry of Defence said in 2018 that it was re-joining the Boxer program, and a month later, the British Army confirmed that the Boxer vehicle had been chosen to meet its Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) requirement. Now, details about the program have been revealed.
An acquisition of 500 Boxer vehicles from German defense contractor Rheinmetall was recently announced by the British Army. The fleet is worth £2.8billion/ $3.9 billion and will include four variants: a command vehicle, an infantry carrier, a specialist carrier, and an ambulance.
While the majority of the fleet will be produced in the UK by main contractors Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) and WFEL, prototypes and future series will be manufactured in Germany at Rheinmetall's Kassel plant. Workers at the German facility will share their technical knowledge with the British team at RBSL, particularly their welding expertise.
Delivery for the 8x8 armored vehicles will begin next year, with the first vehicles expected to be ready for service in 2023.
The Boxer program is part of the British Army's military modernization efforts, which also include the introduction of the Challenger 3 tank and the Ajax armored fighting vehicle. Ajax is now being manufactured in Wales, Boxer will be built in Telford and Stockport, and Challenger 3 will be made in Telford.
New Boxer variants and upgrades are already in the works, according to the British Army. NATO allies Germany, the Netherlands, and Lithuania have already ordered 700 vehicles in various configurations. Australia has also purchased 211 Boxer vehicles in different variants, the first of which have already been delivered.
