The changes announced for the upcoming event will not only regard upgrading the surface but also revise the combination of corners from the first section of the track. As announced by event chairman Colin Syn in an interview for autosport.com site, the organizers made that decision in order to offer drivers more overtaking opportunities during the race.
“We are modifying turns one, two and three because we want drivers to have more opportunities to overtake this year. We want to reduce the bumps and smoothen out the circuit. So that will be an improvement next year to make the race even better than it was in 2008,” revealed Syn.
Most drivers and team managers criticized the track condition last year, especially for its bumpy characteristics. Despite changing the setups completely for the Singapore event, plenty of drivers had a hard time when cornering, with Kimi Raikkonen being the best example of them all. The Ferrari driver failed to finish the race as he was unable to control his car due to the high kerbs on Turn 10 of the circuit.
The set of changes due to be implemented on the Marina Bay circuit are still to be given the go-ahead from the International Automobile Federation (FIA). The F1 teams will also expected to agree with the revisions of the Singapore track.
