Report: Genesis Electric Vehicle In the Pipeline

After the Genesis brand had gone official with the advent of the G90, the next step for the luxury arm of Hyundai was to launch the G80. It was known that four other models are to go into production by the end of the decade, but a new report reveals that Genesis also has all-electric ambitions.

Manfred Fitzgerald, the senior vice president of Genesis Motors and former big shot at Lamborghini, told Automotive News that a Genesis EV will find undoubtedly happen. "We will definitely go as Genesis brand down the road of alternative propulsions and it is very, very obvious that EV is definitely on the map.”

The official didn’t elaborate on a launch date, but I have this gut feeling we won’t have to wait too long to get what we want. "I think full electric cars will be the future in the auto industry," Fitzgerald added. Considering that Hyundai is planning to launch an EV with 200+ miles of range in 2018, I guess that Genesis will deliver its electric model at the same point in time.

While the Hyundai-branded EV will go head to head with the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt, the Genesis-branded electric vehicle will be a more upmarket affair. Think Tesla Motors or thereabout.

The bigger question is, what segment will the Genesis electric vehicle slot in. Will it me a compact executive sedan based on the soon-to-debut G70? Will it be a mid-sized sport utility vehicle? We will have to wait and see whatever the future holds.

If you ask me, I’m betting my two cents on an electric version of the 2018 Genesis G70. Provided that the public gives it the thumbs up, then Genesis will sprinkle all-electric fairy dust over more models in the lineup. An EV which is not based on an existing model in the Genesis range is yet another possible scenario.
