Remember the story of how mind-bogglingly expensive replacement parts are for the Porsche Carrera GT? Turns out the Porsche 918 Spyder isn’t as exorbitant as its acclaimed predecessor is when it comes to replacing components such as the engine.
Let’s make a quick comparo just for the hell of it. The 5.7-liter V10 in the Porsche Carrera GT is $262,951. The 4.6-liter V8 of the Porsche 918 Spyder sans the two electric motors in the front and rear axles? That’s priced at $203,385. To put that figure into perspective, the most well-appointed 2017 Acura NSX is retailing for $205,700.

It is mind-blowing when you think about it. “Should I replace the engine in my Porsche 918 Spyder or should I sell it at CarMax as is and buy an Acura NSX with all the bells and whistles?” And yes, the NSX replaces the Dodge Viper as the most expensive car manufactured in the United States, at least until the $400,000-plus 2017 Ford GT turns up.

After the engine, a question has to be posed: “What if I shift into R for Rocket while driving at 75 mph and make a hash out of my 918 Spyder’s transmission?” That would be a stupid thing to do and an expensive mistake. More specifically, a mistake worth $69,239.

If there’s damage to the underbody protection panel, a replacement part will set the owner back $19,915. If you drop a cigarette butt on the floor mat and ruin it, a new one is $537. For what it’s worth, I’ve found running examples of the Mercedes-Benz W123 on Craigslist for less than that. Owning a high-end and high-power car certainly has its perks. Oh wait, I may have used a counterfactual word. I meant quagmires.

There is not denying that hypercar ownership can get wildly big-ticket, but I have a feeling McLaren and Ferrari ask more than Porsche for replacement parts for the P1 and LaFerrari. Still, it could be worse. A replacement transmission for the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 costs twice as much as the Porsche 918 Spyder's 7-speed PDK dual-clutch.
