Rendering: BMW 8 Series Coupe

It’s quite a dream, right? Seeing the 8 Series Coupe reborn is something every BMW fan wants to see in the near future and with BMW’s current orientation towards every possible niche, seeing it come true seems closer than ever.

Looking over what the 8 Series provided when it was still in production and what the competition does today, you might think that it’s just a matter of time until we get to see it reborn. However, things aren’t just so.

Despite seeing the S-Class Coupe revealed a while back, a car that would be the perfect competitor for a 8er, BMW kept silent up until now. Sure, they created the Gran Lusso Coupe concept with Pininfarina and introduced it with a V12 engine at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013 leaving everyone short of words but they said this car won’t make it to production. What’s left then?

Well, first of all, hope. I, for one, still hope they will change their mind and I’m pretty certain they will. How come? Look at the 2 Series Active Tourer, a FWD abomination in some people’s minds but the only premium alternative for the B-Class from Mercedes, that is selling by the dozen in Germany.

If BMW went so far as to renounce its RWD strategy to bring forward a competitor for that car, why wouldn’t they bring back to life a legendary car as the 8 Series that still causes chins to shimmer every time it’s mentioned?

Furthermore, they’d have the technology to make it absolutely crazy. If there was one thing that people complained about the original, it was its weight. Well, with the new CFRP, aluminum and magnesium combination, that problem might be gone. For ever!

Sure, a V12 might not make it to the chassis, as we have to deal with pollution and global warming these days but that could be compensated by using a V8 with an electric motor running in parallel and it would be mental.

As for the looks, even though some people don’t think that BMW would ever externalize its design, I would be extremely happy if the collaboration with Pininfarina would be continued and a car looking like the rendering below would show up on the assembly lines.
