Drivers who are also members of the fairer sex aren’t exactly famous for their love passion for rowing their own gears, now are they. But for some reason, they aren’t exactly spoiled for choice in the supermini segment. That’s because most automatics make absorb power from already gutless engines.
As a result, it’s not completely strange that a supermini with an automatic can take over 15 seconds to reach 100 km/h. There is a solution, and it’s called the double-clutch gearbox, offering the best of both worlds. VW Group offers this on the Polo, Fabia and Leon, and it actually makes the cars a little bit faster.
Renault is also going to enter this market with its first six-speed dual clutch offered in a B-segment car. It’s called the EDC, short for Efficient Dual Clutch, and it offers reduced consumption and better response.
We already known the gearbox will be used by the Clio RS 200 and its 1.6-liter turbo engine. But in the first half of next year, it will also arrive on the TCe 120 and the dCi 90. We’ve learned from Renault that EDC will be available exclusively on those models, which means you’ll only be able to buy the automatic with the most expensive versions of the Clio. Still, it’s not like the market for automatic superminis is booming right now, so you can’t blame them.
As a refresh, the TCe 120 is a 1.2-liter turbo that’s not available yet on the Clio IV. It will offer 120 horsepower and 190 Nm at 2,000rpm, replacing the need for a 1.6-liter. The dCi 90 is a 1.5-liter diesel which now produces 220 Nm, 20 more than on the old model.
