Renault UK Says Twingo RS 133 Going Bye-Bye

We really haven't got a clue as to why this is, but Renault UK says we should get the "tissues at the ready as UK gears up for fond au revoir to the Twingo Renaultsport 133".

The most powerful Twingo was launched in July 2008 in the UK and since then the company has sold 1,203 units.

all have used the same 1.6-liter 133 hp engine to power a lightweight chassis that only weighs 1050 kg.

The British marketing department takes a non-official apprach, guessing in the dark as to what's coming our way: "So, what’s in store for a future performance Twingo? Officially, there’s been no confirmation of a replacement sporty version of the eagerly-awaited new city car. However, speculation’s rife. Not least as Renault’s Chief Operating Officer, Carlos Tavares, only recently shook the streets of Monaco over the Grand Prix weekend in the jaw-dropping 320hp V6 mid-engined and rear-wheel-drive Twin’Run concept car. Style and powertrain-wise, its bigger brother, the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC has also recently ushered in a chic, five-door bodyshell, plus a downsized turbocharged TCe engine to deliver the same power as its preceding 2.0-litre. Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure, it will be sorely missed."

Here at autoevolution, we believe the Twin'Run Concept does not preview the new Twingo. It's built on a completely new rear-engined, rear-drive architecture to be shared with smart and we have a sneaking suspicion it's going to be the reborn '5'.

Either way, the Clio GT, which also had the 133 hp 1.6-liter model a few years ago but with the arrival of the MkIV Clio has switched to a new turbocharged 1.2-liter with 120 hp. This has made it faster and more economic, both being characteristics that the Twingo RS desperately needs more of.
