Renault to Build Twizy Z.E. Electric Car in Spain

Renault has just confirmed that it will build a new electric vehicle based on the Twizy Z.E. concept displayed at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Valladolid, Spain. The factory is already building Modus and Grand Modus and a share of New Clio output. Production will start in 2011, the company said in a release.

Last month, Renault also announced that this particular plant will be responsible for the production of a thermal engine in 2012 and a fuel-combustion vehicle in 2013.

Earlier today, the French manufacturer also confirmed that it will produce a zero-emission vehicle based on the Zoe Z.E. concept in France, at the Flins factory. Furthermore, the French site will handle production of batteries starting mid-2012, with a production goal of 100,000 units per year.

"The Flins choice is also based on Renault’s objective to produce cars as close as possible to the markets in which they will be sold, namely Europe, to optimize logistics flows. The Flins site will thus become a central hub in Renault's EV activity, producing the company's core-range electric model as well as manufacturing and recycling batteries," Renault said in a release.

The Twizy concept model was displayed at the Frankfurt Auto Show and was powered by a 15 kW electric motor that produced 70 Nm of torque. In terms of performance, it could reach a maximum speed of 75 km/h and provided a maximum range of 100 km per charge. Safety highlights included a four-point harness for the front seat and a three-point seatbelt at the rear, plus a driver airbag and two lateral airbags.
