Talking about Piquet in particular – as Alonso has been a constant point finisher this year, with one or two exceptions – Renault's race team manager Steve Nielsen argued that the Brazilian's performances in 2009 will grow dependent of his confidence. In order for him to improve, Nielsen admits it is Renault who have to make the first step towards creating a competitive car.
“The drivers' confidence, I think is pretty good still. It would be better if we gave them a faster car and we are endeavoring to do that. If we do then Fernando's confidence will grow and Nelson's confidence will grow,” Nielsen was quoted as saying by British broadcaster BBC Oxford.
“Nelson is still a driver who is quite young in terms of experience. I think he needs bit more time, and given a bit more time and a better car hopefully he can produce some results,” added the Renault manager.
Piquet's gain in form was most visible during the Turkish Grand Prix two weekends ago, when the Brazilian – although finishing behind Alonso in the race – posted a better quick lap than his more experienced teammate. Also, his poor performance in qualifying was caused by a technical problem with the R29, as he would have had a good chance of making the Q3 otherwise.
Nevertheless, as rumor goes around the F1 paddock, it seems Nelson's days with Renault are numbered, as he will allegedly be replaced by GP2 ace Romain Grosjean after the Hungarian GP if the former does not consistently improve his form in the championship.
