Renault Sport R.S. 01 Police Car Chases Biker, We Dream of Street R.S. 01

With Renault Sport having released the manic R.S. 01, the go-fast arm of the largest French carmaker is on a constant look for new ways of capitalizing on its investment.
The latest move of this kind, sees the R.S. 01 being used as a police interceptor, with the racecar chasing a speeding motorcyclist in nothing less than highway traffic.

With Jean Ragnotti, a man who used to put Renault and WRC into the same sentence, behind the wheel, the racecar is nothing short of glorious in this clip. Perhaps the police lights also have something to do with it.

Going past the good times offered by the clip, we can't help but allow the footage to make us dream of a road-going version of the machine.

However, as we've found out during an interview with a Renault Sport executive, the automaker has considered a street incarnation of the R.S. 01, with the business case behind the transformation falling apart. In the end, it's all about placing the Renault badge on something that comes with the price of a Ferrari. And that simply doesn't work, no matter how good the vehicle itself is.

Do keep in mind that we are talking about a carbon-bodied racer that uses a custom version of the Nissan GT-R twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6. Tipping the scales at 1,150 kg (2,535 lbs) and playing in the 500 hp arena, this track-confined Renault comes with a price tag of $400,000.

As we said in the intro, this ad is part of a greater plan that sees Renault Sport aiming to find new ways of putting the R.S. 01 to work.

While the R.S. 01 competes in its own one-make racing series, the automaker downgraded the car to what can be considered a GT3 spec last year, with this allowing the machine to take part in a wider range of competitions.
