Renault has announced that it delivered the 50,000th Zoe. When it comes to hatchbacks made by a volume carmaker, this figure would not be impressive. In fact, Zoe’s sale results would have been disastrous if the model had been an internal combustion vehicle.
Instead, Zoe is considered a success, because it is an entirely electric vehicle, designed from scratch to perform this function.
Renault launched the Zoe in 2013 (first customer deliveries in December 2012), along with the Twizy and Kangoo ZE. In the past three years, the French brand has watched the EV market grow exponentially, as it reached a global expansion of 48% in 2015.
Last year was a magnificent one for Renault’s electric hatchback, which achieved 18,500 sales. While the number is not groundbreaking, the French brand secured a 55% market share in its country, along with a 20% European share of the segment.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance has a broad range of electric vehicles, including the highly successful Nissan Leaf. The Zoe is smaller than the Leaf and provides lower overall range, and is also cheaper to acquire. The hatchback comes with a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can provide an NEDC-estimated range of over 210 kilometers (130 miles).
Renault builds the Zoe in Flins, France, and the carmaker has decided to organize a special delivery ceremony for this milestone vehicle. The 50,000th customer of the Renault Zoe is a mother named Sylvie.
She says that her children persuaded her to buy a Zoe, which her family will use for everyday journeys. Sylvie lives in Saint-Cloud, outside Paris, and was presented the keys to her car in front of the workers of the Flins factory.
According to Renault, there are over 60,000 public charging points for electric vehicles in Europe. Thanks to a project called Corri-Door, 200 fast-charge stations for EVs can be found every 80 kilometers (49 miles) along France’s motorways. From personal experience, I can tell you the distance is enough to enable driving the Renault Zoe without running out of “juice.”
