Renault Sold 1 Million Cars With Carminat TomTom

Today, having an integrated satellite navigation system built by a specialist in a small, affordable car might not seem like a big deal, but when Renault started fitting TomToms in their vehicles, we all realized they were on to something.

Now, the French carmaker has announced it has topped the one-million mark of vehicles fitted with Carminat TomTom navigation system. In the UK market, it’s fitted as standard to the Dynamique trim levels of each bodystyle in the Clio, Kangoo, Mégane, Scénic, Laguna ranges, plus the core trim levels of the Kangoo, Trafic and Master van ranges. On most other lower trim levels, including Renaultsport cars, the system can be fitted as an optional extra for the price of £470.

First road trials of the Carminat system were launched in 1994, and the system was improved upon in 2002 with the arrival of dynamic route guidance and the recalculation of journey times, for example in the case of a reduction in vehicle speed.

TomTom arrived on the scene in 2009 and a big leap forward was taken in late 2010 with the launch of Carminat TomTom LIVE that offers:
  • HD Traffic: for the best traffic information in real time
  • Road safety alerts: real-time alerts on incidents, dangerous areas and risk areas
  • Google local search: shows points of interest from nearly 20 million references
  • Five-day weather forecasts

“We are extremely happy to announce that the one millionth Carminat TomTom has been fitted in a Renault vehicle. This figure is tangible proof of the success of our product and our partnership with Renault. We plan to continue this partnership with Renault in the long term by bringing our customer the best of our expertise,”
said Giles Shrimpton, CEO of TomTom Automotive.

“One million Renault owners have since 2009 chosen an in-dash Carminat TomTom navigation system. Today this intelligent on-board system brings customers connected services that are highly appreciated and hard to go without once you have experienced their quality,” added Stephen Norman, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing at Renault.
