Making good on the promise it made when it revealed the second generation of the Captur in the summer of 2019, French carmaker Renault finally spilled the beans on the plug-in hybrid variant of the crossover.
The new Captur was built on a new platform, which allowed the carmaker to go for an electrified powertrain of this type for the first time. With the hybrid system, Renault also created the most powerful Captur that ever rolled off assembly lines.
The plug-in hybrid system comprises a 1.6-liter gasoline engine that works together with a 9.8 kWh battery and two electric motors. The combined power of the hardware is 160 hp, more than the 130 hp developed by the top of the range TCe 130 GPF currently available.
The battery of the PHEV can hold enough electricity to keep the car going without emissions for as much as 30 miles (48 km) at speeds that can reach 84 mph (135 kph). The 0-100 kph (62 mph) acceleration time in this mode has been rated at 10.1 seconds.
Renault will make the plug-in hybrid variant of the Captur available in September in Europe. Prices for the model in the UK start at £30,495, and we are also told buyers will also receive a BP Chargemaster Wallbox for their charging needs. It takes the battery in the car about three hours to charge from 0 to 100 percent using this wallbox.
Separately, Renault also announced the launch of a hybrid variant for the new Clio. In this case, we’re talking about a 1.6-liter gasoline engine working together with a starter generator. At 140 hp, it too is the most powerful in its respective family. Deliveries for the hybrid Clio also begin in September, with prices to start from £19,595.
For both cars, the order books are already open. More details about them can be found in the press release section below.
