Formula One is about to enter a new era after FIA decided to to introduce new engine regulations for the 2014 season, basically eliminating the V8 in favor of a smaller turbocharged V6.
While this season's competitors have just revealed their updated 2013 single seaters, French company Renault seems to be one step ahead with their all-new 2014 engine design and even decided to reveal some preliminary technical specifications.
With FIA's new fuel restrictions in mind, Renault has started developing their new energy efficient V6 Power Unit consisting a V6 turbo engine (singe-stage turbocharger) and two electric motors for a joined capacity of 1.6-liters.
According to their latest press release, the unit will have direct fuel injection and an output of over 600 horsepower, while the maximum engine speed is rated at 15,000 rpm, about 16% less than the current V8 RS27. Power from the Energy Recovering System will be about 160 HP and available for a five times larger duration every lap (about 30 seconds).
"Improving the energy efficiency of an engine entails transmitting as much of the energy produced as possible to the wheels mechanically and re-using as much of the energy resulting from the fuel’s combustion as possible. The aim of the new regulations is effectively to increase combustion efficiency thanks to the combination of downsizing, turbocharging and the recovery of the energy contained in exhaust heat (ERS- H) and lost as heat under braking (ERS-K) and then re-using this energy as electricity," said Rob White, Deputy General Manager and Technical Director, Renault Sport F1.
