Renault signed a formal agreement with Daimler, for the production of the all-new Smart ForTwo and the all-new Twingo, and the two cars were reportedly going share the same platform, and engines. However, according to Car Magazine, the extent of the tie-up between the two companies has been reduced.
Apparently, the Twizy and ForTwo will be developed separately, and will not be sharing any mechanical components to speak of. Still, the two companies will still work together on the development of the larger ForFour model, for Smart, which is set to debut some time next year.
It would have been nice for the two cars to be developed together, and in this way, the Renault Twingo would most likely have been rear-wheel driven. It would also have been very interesting to see what the folks at RenaultSport would have done with the car, if it would have remained in RWD form.
