With the back-to-back wins in Singapore and Fuji, Renault officials admit that the results from the second part of the season have led to increased enthusiasm on developing the car for next year. Now that they managed to get closer to their championship rivals in terms of car performance, Renault are now confident that next year they'll be challenging for wins race after race.
“The way we've turned the situation around has given us an enormous boost as we've proved we can out-develop our competitors and arguably out-develop those that are leading the championship because we really have moved a lot closer to them. think that's a great message to take through to next year with so many new factors being introduced because we've shown that we can steal the initiative with this sort of thing,” said Renault's engineering chief Pat Symonds.
He also tipped his team to make a good impression in Brazil, as both Fernando Alonso and Nelsinho Piquet have upped their performances in the last few races. Symonds admitted that the circuit at Interlagos does not suit the Renault car very well and pointed out some of the weaknesses the Renault drivers would have to pay attention to on the Brazilian track.
“As well as our strengths, our weaknesses are still there and I think that the exit out of turn 12 and the long drag up the hill to the first corner will be quite tough for us and not an area where we will be particularly strong. However, the car should be good through the quick corners of turns 3 and 5, and overall I think we can maintain a similar level of competitiveness to that which we've shown in the past few races,” concluded Symonds.
Renault will also benefit from FIA's new regulations, permitting some of the teams to bring their engine performances to the same level as the championship's big guns McLaren, Ferrari and BMW. The measure will be implemented to ensure equalization of engine performance within F1 teams.
