Renault-Nissan to Build Four Battery Plants in Europe

The Alliance is doing well and it would seem it heavily plans to become the leader of the future EV automotive sector. With Nissan already getting machines on the ground for the Smyma facility in the US, in Europe, together with ally Renault, they plan to built no less than four factories on the old-continent for the production of lithium-ion batteries.

"In Europe, we haven't made the final decisions, but we will soon," Colin Dodge, Nissan's executive vice president for the Africa, Middle East, India and Europe region was quoted as saying by Autonews.

As for the sites were the four plants will be built, it is too early to say. Dodge said that Nissan would prefer to produce its 250kg lithium-ion battery packs close to its vehicle assembly sites in the UK and Spain, while Renault will obviously go for France.

Even if Nissan says a final decision about European expansion has not yet been made, it is likely the two will do so, in light of their projected 2011 EV assault. In fact, both companies' future plans seem to have something to do with 2011: Nissan will launch the first EV in Portugal, Denmark, Israel, the United States and Japan, while Renault will bring its very own version the same year.

The first steps towards introducing Nissan or Renault sourced electric vehicles will be taken next month, when the Japanese will unveil not one, not two, but three electric vehicles. Carlos Ghosn, who plays an important role in both companies, promised "big cars, small cars, vans, light commercial vehicles, entry-level cars," and all of them electric.
