Renault-Nissan Partners with the Wuhan Government

The effort to set the stage for the market entry of the Nissan Leaf starting later this year continues, as the Renault-Nissan Zero Emissions alliance continues to partner with governments around the world. The latest signing took place in Yokohama, Japan, where the two companies signed a definitive agreement to develop zero-emission mobility with the People's Government of Wuhan.

"Wuhan is working towards becoming an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly city. Introducing electric vehicles (EVs) in the city is an important part of the process to make this happen," Ruan Chengfa, mayor of Wuhan City said in a release. "The agreement signed with Nissan is one significant step forward to realizing these goals."

According to the terms of the agreement, a market feasibility study of EVs in Wuhan will begin in 2011 with 25 Leafs. Wuhan will build 250 EV chargers to support the vehicles, while at the same will set up education and awareness programs.

"The Alliance believes that increased use of EVs will significantly contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, air pollutants and use of petroleum fuel," Hiroto Saikawa, Nissan vice president added.

"Nissan is pleased to become the first international auto manufacturer to sign an agreement with a Chinese partner. We believe Nissan will have a positive impact in Wuhan with this winning partnership to introduce and promote EVs here."
