When Renault unveiled the Kwid, CEO Carlos Ghosn stated that the CMF-A platform underneath will underpin an entire family of cars. But unless we are mistaken, the only other production model so far is the Datsun redi-GO.
Recent reports from Indian media are suggesting that the next CMF-A car is a sedan based. The Kwid hatchback will apparently be stretched out to make a notch-back.
We even have a rendering, courtesy of SRK-Designs. Even though we all see it as an ugly little car that nobody should ever buy, it's not unimaginable. Volkswagen, a much more reputable car brand, recently turned the Polo into a sedan as well, the Ameo.
Chevrolet is also developing a car that it should never have, the Spark-based sub-4-meter sedan.
Indian Autos Blog is reporting that the yet unnamed Kwid sedan has the internal codename LBC. Just like in the case of the hatchback, the formula boils down to offering cheap, fuel efficient motoring.
The so-called "sub-compact" car segment appeared in India thank to select government tax cuts that make motoring more affordable. Technically, Tata was the first to launch such a car, but it didn't take off until Maruti Suzuki brought the Swift DZire.
As some of you might know, Maruti Suzuki is the biggest in the Indian car business, and immediately after, rivals appeared. These included the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, Ford Figo Aspire and the recently introduced VW Ameo.
However, we must mention that sources in France have denied the existence of a sub-compact sedan project, instead hinting at an SUV. Considering this is the biggest market in India, we don't see why both can't be made. After all, with no airbags and low safety rating, these rides are much cheaper to develop than their European counterparts.
