Renault Increases Megane Production

The newly-launched Renault Megane is selling incredibly well, which forces the French manufacturer boost production at its Palencia factory in Spain. Renault announced the production of the new model will be increased starting September this year by 200 units of daily production, bringing the daily capacity to 1,320 vehicles.

Obviously, Renault also needs additional workforce, so the company will hire some 350 temporary new workers, beside the 3,200 employees already working at the plant. According to Autonews, the Palencia plant rolled out no less than 164,000 vehicles in 2008 but the demand for the new Megane is still high in many European countries.

This is the second production increase when it comes to Renault Megane as the parent company announced in late April that it will add a third shift at the Spanish plant in order to raise the daily output from 920 units to 1,100 vehicles.

In terms of sales figures, Renault sold a total of 70,000 Meganes since last November when it officially introduced the hatchback. As expected, the French manufacturer is extremely pleased with this growing demand, hinting that the scrapping bonuses offered by European governments are pretty much the main reason for this impressive boost.

The new Megane, which comes in two- or four-door bodystyles, is now available with a wide array of engine versions, starting with a 1.5 dCI unit developing 105 horsepower and ending with a 2.0-liter turbocharged option generating 180 horsepower and 221.3 lb-ft of torque. This particular configuration helps the car jump from naught to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds, with a top speed going as high as 139.8 mph (225 km/h).
