In Europe, Renault’s electric Zoe leads the pack when it comes to electric vehicles sales. The nameplate is more appealing there than the Tesla Model 3, for instance – and cheaper, of course – making the French confident they can post great figures in other markets as well. Like say China.
The Asian country is currently the biggest market for cars in the world, and that includes electric vehicles. The appetite of the Chinese for EVs has given birth to a wealth of local brand and has also drawn the attention of foreign carmakers.
Locally, Renault is working with several companies for the production of cars. One of these partners, Jiangling Motors Corporation Group (JMCG) has been selected to build together with Renault a series of electric cars for China.
The two companies announced on Wednesday they signed a deal that will see the creation of a joint venture tasked with making EVs. To help things move along, Renault will contribute €128.5 million and become a majority stakeholder in a JMCG subsidiary, JMEV.
Until now, JMEV has been a minor player in China, having sold 38,000 electric cars in 2017 and around 50,000 in 2018.
“China is a key market for Groupe Renault. This partnership in electric vehicle business with JMCG will support our growth plan in China and our EV capabilities,” said in a statement Francois Provost, Renault vice president in charge with the China region.
“As a pioneer and leader in the European EV market for 10 years, we will capitalize on our experience in EV R&D, production, sales and services.”
To date, neither Renault nor JMCG detailed the products they would be producing together. The French carmaker says more info will be provided at a future date. What is known is that the cars are probably going to be sold under the Eveasy name.
