With the 2016 edition of the Geneva Motor Show just around the corner, French carmaker Renault has revealed that it will have not one but two global debuts, both belonging to the compact segment.
One of them is clearly the all-new Scenic, which the company has previously talked about, saying that it will revolutionize the MPV segment. It will be like joining the Megane and Espace into one vehicle, so we have something to look forward to.
Like its big brother, the Espace, the Scenic will take on the appearance of a crossover. European consumers have been shying away from vehicles without ground clearance, so to keep the MPV segment alive, Renault has made some changes. Of course, it's not going to have all-wheel drive, but the body will be rounded at the bottom, and an XMOD derivative looks likely.
Unlike the previous Scenic, the 2016 model will have LED headlights, a heads-up display, digital dash and maybe even rear-wheel steering. The platform will be shared with the Megane 4 hatchback and so will the engines. These will consist of the 1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi, 1.2 TCe and 1.6 TCe, each with two power ratings.
The second new Renault to debut in Geneva is not a certainty. However, the Megane Wagon or Sport Tourer looks like the most likely candidate. It has only recently been seen for the first time while undergoing testing. But just because Renault is showing the car doesn't mean that it has to enter production soon.
By stretching the back of the Megane 4 hatchback, Renault will give its European customers a larger load, somewhere in the region of 550 liters. All of he engines from the regular 5-door will be carried over, including the range-topping 205 hp GT model.
The other potential debuts could be a sedan version of the Megane / replacement for the Fluence or the Grand Captur. The subcompact crossover will undoubtedly be stretched in 2016, but Geneva might be one major motor show too soon.
