Renault will be present at this year’s edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it will showcase several new models for the first time in the United Kingdom, including the Renault 5 electric hatchback.
The retro-futuristic electric vehicle forms part of Renault’s push toward electrification, which will include seven EVs by 2025. A prototype of the upcoming EV will be on display all weekend, June 23 -26, on the French automaker’s stand.
The new Renault 5 electric supermini made its first appearance at the Munich motor show in early 2021, and this is the first time it is presented in the UK.
When it comes to its design and fine-tuning, the 5 EV takes inspiration from the original model, which Renault produced from 1972 to 1996, but features a bold, contemporary new look.
Essential design elements like the shape of the hatchback, the rear light signature, and the window line have been maintained in the revived model, though the angular body design has been modernized.
“The design of the Renault 5 Prototype is based on the R5, a cult model of our heritage. This prototype simply embodies modernity, a vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive,” said Renault design chief Gilles Vidal.
Built on the Renault Group’s new CMF-BEV platform for small electric cars, the revived model will benefit from new powertrain technology and will feature nickel, manganese, and cobalt-based (NCM) batteries that are expected to reduce the cost per kWh to approximately $100 (95 euro) by 2030.
Details on the vehicle’s power, torque, battery size, or range have not been yet disclosed, but we know the platform it is based on offers a range of around 400 km (248.5 miles).
Thousands of drivers have already registered their interest in Renault’s newest electric vehicle, whose price will start from around $22,700 (21,500 Euro).
The concept the carmaker will showcase on Electric Avenue during the weekend previews the future Renault 5, whose production is scheduled to kick off in 2024.
Alongside the Renault 5 EV concept, the French automaker will also bring the all-new Megane E-Tech Electric, and a new version of the Renault 4 supermini, called 4ever, to Goodwood.
