Remapped BMW E92 M3 Gets Dyno Tested, Sounds Good

When dealing with turbocharged engines, tuners can change their boost in order to squeeze a couple of extra horsepower out of them, with a couple of nifty tricks. It’s not as easy when you’re tuning naturally aspirated engines.

In this case, there’s little you can do to improve the HP and torque numbers. Adding some more parts to the mix might help but unless you go for some form of forced induction (supercharger/turbocharger) you can’t really get huge increases.

Going for a turbocharged setup then poses new concerns related to lag and pedal response and a lot of people steer off this solution. For the E9x M3 platform, the best choice remains a supercharger. There are a variety of tuners out there specialized in such matter but even though the turbo lag isn’t a problem in this case, some people prefer to go for a safer route.

This route implies a new ECU map, new exhaust and a new intake. That’s about all you can do to upgrade your ride. That’s what the owner of the car below did to his E92 M3.

He added a Dinan Intake system to his S65 engine along with an Evolve ECU tune, Dinan underdrive pulley and an Akrapovic evolution titanium exhaust system with GT catless x-pipe.

The result? Well, according to the dyno, the car now has 386 WHP and 277 lb-ft (375 Nm) WTQ, more than respectable numbers for a naturally aspirated engine. Even though they are lagging behind the numbers posted by the S55 twin-turbo engine on the new M3, the sharpness of the gas pedal and that unmistakable sound of the V8 can’t be matched.
